2. History of Vadodara

Vadodara, formerly known as Baroda, is a major city in the

western Indian state of Gujarat. The city is situated on the banks

of the Vishwamitri River, which is named after the great sage
Vishwamitra.

Vadodara’s history spans several centuries, with human

settlement since the Stone Age. It was earlier called
"Ankotakka" and "Vadpadrak," and was ruled by dynasties like

the Mauryas, Guptas, Chalukyas and the Delhi Sultanate.

Vadodara - tHE city of Culture and Heritage

In the early 18th century, the Marathas took control and

in 1721, the Gaekwad dynasty made Vadodara their capital,
significantly contributing to its development and cultural growth.

During the reign of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III

(1875–1939), Vadodara witnessed tremendous progress. He
was a progressive ruler who made significant contributions to

education, health, transportation and social reforms.

Present-day Vadodara is renowned for its palaces,

museums and higher educational institutions. Today, Vadodara
represents a beautiful blend of history and modernity and is

considered one of the most important and vibrant cities of
Gujarat.
